Cuba 1953 José Martí Silver Peso Extra Fine
With a mintage of just 100,000, this big silver coin was produced by the Philadelphia Mint for circulation in Cuba. It shares the same silver content as a classic U.S. silver dollar. Issued before the communist revolution, it was created to commemorate the centennial of the birth of José Martí. A prominent figure in Latin American literature, he was one of the founding fathers of a free Cuba. Martí, an advocate for democracy, devoted his life to ending colonial rule and died a hero in the war for Cuban independence in 1895. Extra Fine quality.
