Son of the famous painter Ted De Grazia who once painted patio walls for $25 to $30. He credited his eventual success to Raymond Carlson, a long-time editor of the highly popular Arizona Highways magazine. Carlson bought $50 worth of paintings from De Grazia when he put on a one-man show in Phoenix.

His paintings began showing up in the publication, which circulates worldwide, and through the years De Grazia continued to contribute to the magazine.

De Grazia made headlines in 1976 when he rode by horseback into the rugged Superstition Mountains of central Arizona to burn 100 of his paintings, valued at $1.5 million, to protest U.S. tax laws. Witnesses said tears streamed down his face as the paintings went up in smoke.

De Grazia said he burned them because the Internal Revenue Service, by pegging his work to market values, made him 'a millionaire on paper and my heirs will have to pay taxes for which there is no money.'
