Description:
John August Dominique created a large body of landscape and abstract paintings in his long lifeand was recognized as a significant member of the California art community. Spanning an 80 year career in art working in many styles including Plein Air, Impressionism, Expressionism, Surrealism and Abstracts.

Born in Virserum, Sweden on Oct. 1, 1893. He spent his youth in Oregon where he began his art career as a typesetter and cartoonist for a small newspaper.  He later worked at the Portland Art Museum, attended art classes there in 1913, and then continued his studies in San Francisco at the Institute of Art (1915-16) and the Van Sloan School of Painting (1917). He had further study in the 1920s at the Santa Barbara School of Arts. 

He studied with California art luminaries, Colin Campbell Cooper, Armin Hansen & Carl Oscar Borg.

Exhibitions Works have been exhibited at the Portland Art Museum in Oregon, Oakland Art Museum in California, Los Angeles Art Museum, California Art Club, California Water Color Society, Pasadena Art Museum, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and Charles and Emma Frye Art Museum in Seattle Washington, Nevada Museum of Art, Wiegand Gallery Reno Nevada.

Dominique Lived to be 100 years old with a celebratory exhibit at The Oaks in Ojai, California for his Centennial Birthday.  He had an 80-year career as an artist and continued to paint after being declared legally blind.
